Session A2: From Shore to Door: Designing AFV Operations Across Terminals & Logistics Hubs

Participants will examine how alternative fuel vehicle operations can be integrated across ports, terminals, and logistics hubs. They will compare design considerations for energy supply, equipment movement, dwell time, and facility workflow in complex operational environments. The session will help attendees identify practical strategies for building efficient, resilient hub-based transportation systems.

Patrick Collignon, born native Belgian, has an international career in the automotive and commercial vehicle industry, working for both General Motors and the Volvo Group. He managed automotive plants, both in Belgium and the United States. From 2012 on, he was COO/SVP for Volvo Group Trucks in North and South America covering the four Volvo Group truck brands ( Volvo, Mack, UD, Renault ). In 2018-19, he headed a strategic initiative to develop and industrialize the medium duty truck platforms for the Volvo Group in North America, resulting in a game changing industrial concept.

In 2019, Patrick Collignon left the Volvo Group and pursued the incubation of Trova Commercial Vehicles Inc with the objective to develop and industrialize full electric commercial vehicles.

Patrick Collignon holds multiple academic degrees from Institutes and Universities in both Europe and the United States.

Over the years, Patrick has incubated several companies and held board positions in economic and industry federations. In 2007, he was instrumental in making the Volvo plant in Ghent, Belgium the first carbon neutral automotive plant in the world. 

He has extensive experience in E2E value chain management, customer relationship management, product development and has a proven operational track record. Over his career, he has managed everything from plant closures to building new plants, from product design changes to new vehicle platform management, in and outsourcing and was responsible for union labor contract negotiations in Europe, Brazil and the US.

He is heavily engaged in economic development and strongly believes in multi-stakeholder models as the next phase towards advanced performance management. Most of all, he takes great pride in achieving superior employee engagement and customer satisfaction.

Matthew Fuhr is the President of Advanced Logistics Systems, a last-mile delivery and logistics firm operating out of North Carolina and Virginia. He has had a career steeped in supply chain, business development, logistics, entrepreneurism, and innovation. He

Matthew serves on the Advisory Board for the Dock to Door Coalition. Mr. Fuhr is a graduate of Bentley College where he played soccer.

Wes Mabe is  Director of Operations with Camrett Logistics a 3PL provider specializing in warehousing, cross docking, transportation services, and line sequencing with locations in central and southwestern Virginia.  Wes has over 38 years of experience in Logistics working with a major OEM and multiple 3PLs.  Wes is an active participant with the Virginia Maritime Association Southwest Chapter, Virginia Clean Cities , Dock to Door Coalition and the IWLA. He is a graduate of Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va.

Scott Whitehurst joined the Virginia Port Authority in October 2015 after working in the environmental field for 20 years.  As an environmental professional, additional highlights of his career include working in air, water, and waste programs with the Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Beach Health Department, The City of Norfolk Department of Public Works, and the Southeastern Public Service Authority.

In his capacity as Director, Environmental Policy and Compliance at the Port of Virginia, Scott leads a small but effective team orchestrating all sustainability, permitting and compliance activities, decarbonization efforts, as well as The Port’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
